The Dada & Surrealism Research Group (DSRG) has been established to bring together world-class scholarship on Dada and Surrealism across the University of Edinburgh. The Group provides an interdisciplinary forum for staff and students to facilitate exchanges between researchers, practitioners, and curators.

Dada & Surrealism Research Group members are working on leading international projects and collaborate closely with some of the world’s greatest art institutions, including MoMA, Royal Academy of Arts, LACMA, National Galleries of Scotland, National Gallery of Canada, The Photographers’ Gallery, and TATE.

DSRG meetings are held twice each semester, during which group members discuss new work.

External speakers are regularly invited to deliver lectures and workshops as part of our undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and to give public talks at the weekly History of Art Research Seminar Series.

Recently, PhD candidate DSRG members organised Aggression, Transgression, and the Avant-garde, a one-day interdisciplinary event at ECA considering the nature, significance and legacies of avant-garde responses to the various socio-political crises of the twentieth century.

The DSRG welcomes staff and students from across the University of Edinburgh. Please get in touch with the Group Convener, Dr Patricia Allmer, if you would like to join and share your expertise.

DSRG events for 2017/18 include:

  • Professor Peter Dayan's one-day workshop on Tristan Tzara's artist books in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art's and University of Edinburgh's libraries and collections
  • An international conference organised and convened by Dr Freya Gowrley and Cole Collins on Collage, Montage, Assemblage: Collected and Composite Forms, 1700-Present
  • Reading and film group sessions
