Biography

Thorranze is a graphic designer, brand strategist, creative entrepreneur and Teaching Fellow based in Edinburgh.

After graduating from the MA Graphic Design programme at Edinburgh College of Art in 2016, he founded his own creative studio Red Unit in Edinburgh, later rebranded as Time Machine + Folks in 2022, working across brand strategy, identity and creative direction, with clients including Scotland's national brand, Johnstons of Elgin, Harris Tweed Hebrides and The Bicester Collection. His work has been recognised by Communication Arts, the Scottish Design Awards, the Dieline and World Brand Design Society.

Before his time in Edinburgh, he studied Advertising in China, graduating in 2013, before going on to work at international agencies Dentsu as a media buyer and McCann Erickson as a copywriter while freelancing as a graphic designer.

His creative practice began with a deep passion for visual art, photography and cinematography, rooted in a period of rapid urban transformation in his home city of Guangzhou, China. Witnessing the erasure of historic neighbourhoods in his teenage years and early twenties moved him to use graphic design and visual communication as tools for cultural activism and heritage preservation. This passion subsequently evolved into a broader focus on multiculturalism and cross-cultural communication, shaped by the international environment he found himself in following his postgraduate study.

Thorranze's work has a strong focus on storytelling, balancing contemporary edge with the richness of human touch. He enjoys experimenting with emerging technology as well as embracing traditional techniques within his creative process.
