Biography

David Lemm is a visual artist based in Edinburgh. He was appointed Lecturer in Graphic Design at ECA in 2023. Having studied Animation at Duncan of Jordanstone, Dundee, his approach has evolved with an interdisciplinary ethos and includes a wealth of design industry experience alongside his personal practice.

David’s current research considers relationships between image, meaning and material process, exploring a design methodology informed by notions of encounter, collection, synthesis and remnant. He produces practice based outputs primarily working across printmaking, drawing, collage and installation. He has previously investigated representations of landscape through mapping and site specific enquiry and has undertaken numerous residencies. He was awarded the Jon Schueler Scholarship at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in 2017 and has produced public art commissions in Lerwick, Edinburgh and at Royal Brompton Hospital which was Highly Commended at the European Healthcare Design Awards 2022.

His 2014 project ‘Mapping Eigg’ was inducted into the V&A Dundee Scottish Design Galleries collection in 2023 and he has frequently exhibited at the RSA, including “Reduct: Abstraction and Geometry in Scottish Art’ (2020). Solo presentations include “Debris & Phenomena”, Edinburgh Printmakers (2015), “Mapping Kings Cross” at House of Illustration, London (2016) and “Fastenings” at Moray Art Centre, Findhorn (2023)  He is a studio holder at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.
