Since graduating from ECA, Samson has moved back to Hong Kong and set up their own interior architecture design studio. Using the skills and knowledge they learned at ECA, Samson continues to be inspired by Edinburgh, which is reflected in their practice today.

Why ECA?

Edinburgh holds a special place in my heart as one of my favourite cities; cherished for its cityscape, architecture, history, and even its unique weather (despite differing opinions regarding the weather part). The Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), one of the prestigious design schools in Scotland, has become my dream destination to study design. What sets ECA apart is its commitment to providing diverse opportunities, including subjects like glass making and exhibitions, which add unique dimensions to our experiences. These additional design avenues enrich our journey, expanding our skills and perspectives.

“Studying in Edinburgh not only enriched my academic knowledge but also exposed me to a different way of life—an invaluable experience for any designer.”

Tell us about your time at ECA

Over the years, we have dedicated ourselves to studying and exploring 40 George Square, a captivating brutalist building that sits on our main campus. Through theoretical analysis, we have delved deep into its architectural intricacies, offering innovative design solutions and crafting meticulous technical drawings. The support of our professors and tutors has been instrumental in our design development. Given the diverse backgrounds and expertise of our classmates, some may not be familiar with the industry standards of interior architecture. The technical sessions prove invaluable, particularly for those with limited practical experience in this field, as they provide a comprehensive understanding of how things work from a technical standpoint. We strongly believe that a well-rounded design education encompasses not only creativity but also a firm grasp of the practical aspects. In the realm of interior design, striking a balance between artistic vision and technical feasibility is of utmost importance.

After graduating, I returned to Hong Kong, yet the allure of Scotland and the cherished memories I made there still tug at my heart. Prior to my study program, I had already spent two years working in the design field. Following my graduation from ECA, I took a leap of faith and established my own design studio, JINDOSH INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE, in Hong Kong. Studying in Edinburgh not only enriched my academic knowledge but also exposed me to a different way of life - an invaluable experience for any designer. I aspire to bring the positive aspects and aesthetics I encountered in Edinburgh back to Hong Kong, infusing them into my work. At times, I find solace and draw design inspiration by simply closing my eyes, envisioning myself lying on The Meadows. It's in those moments that I discover inner peace and a wellspring of creative ideas.

Alumni wisdom

The pandemic robbed us of precious moments to connect with classmates and cool folks in Edinburgh, a regret I genuinely feel. Now, it's your chance to break free, even if you're an introvert. Embrace this opportunity to interact and dive into the wonders of the school and city. These memories will be etched in your heart forever. Don't let language be an excuse; try, learn, and grow. Speak up with your cool ideas in class; the people of Edinburgh are kind and accepting that no one is going to discriminate against you. This journey will be unforgettable, so seize it.
