Alison House

Our Alison House music studios have a suite of features to cater to the different disciplines housed here. Some studios are linked with the recording room and can be used for recording music or sound effects, while others are more suited to composition, production or mixing work. In addition, there are rooms focussed on sonic experimentation and manipulation, and sound design studios which are ideal for editing complex audio-visual work in surround sound.

All studios have a wide range of software including Pro Tools, Reaper, Logic and hundreds of plugins running on Mac Pros. There is also a Mac lab dedicated to audio production. Supporting the studios there is an extensive equipment stock with a huge range of microphones - including Neumann, Schoeps, and AKG - professional location-recording equipment, and PA systems for concerts or installations.

This is by no means the full list of studio and equipment resources available to students, and it is regularly updated with the latest hardware and software. Reid Studio

Our flagship studio is located beneath the famous Reid Concert Hall in the heart of Edinburgh and is purpose-built for recording sessions in the venue, from soloists to orchestras. The 218-seat Victorian concert hall and accompanying studio are an integral part of teaching and performance activities at Reid School of Music.

The studio was designed to offer the best in analogue and digital recording and processing, and includes an SSL AWS 900+ SE 24 channel analogue mixing desk, PMC TwoTwo 6 surround monitoring, and Mytek Digital converters. The concert hall houses two Steinway D concert grand pianos, a harpsichord and a pipe organ, and the studio has 24 microphone inputs, eight returns and talkback.

Support

You will be supported and advised by our Technical Learning Services team on making the most of the studio equipment here, and regular training workshops are run on specific recording and post-production techniques.
