Research title:

Designing for Storage: Exploring the Role of Storing in Facilitating Narrative Transition and Empathy in Contemporary Jewellery Practice

Biography

Yaning Liu is a contemporary jewellery artist and researcher. He holds an MA degree in Jewellery and Metal from the Royal College of Art and a BA in Arts and Crafts from Beijing Union University. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Galerie Marzee Graduate Show, London Design Festival, and Munich Jewelry Week. His practice has been featured in publications such as Current Obsession, Klimt02, and SMCK Magazine.

His current practice-based research investigates how jewellery’s stored state functions as a site for narrative transition, generation, and empathetic connection, as well as how it evidences human absence during this dormant phase. Positioned within the context of the “post-maker era,” the study focuses on the narrative transition space - the transformation of narrative agency from maker to wearer - through the lens of storage. It explores how (un)predictable storage behaviours and methods can be anticipated and integrated into the design and making process, enabling jewellery to sustain presence and meaning even in its invisible or dormant state.
