Shaopei began his professional music studies at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou, China. In 2017, he was selected as one of the first ten "Top Innovative Talents" funded by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music. As a musician proficient in the Chinese traditional instrument Erhu and passionate about music performance, he has held and participated in hundreds of concerts across China and Europe. In 2020, he became the first graduate in the history of the conservatory's Chinese music department to rank first in five categories: music performance, overall grades, grade point average, final recital, and thesis. Later, his interest in music academic research led him to complete a Master's degree in Musicology at the University of Edinburgh, where he earned Distinction-level grades for his postgraduate individual research project and graduation thesis.
Currently, Shaopei is focusing on applying the framework of positive psychology to explore issues in high-quality music performance, music education, and music psychology. His research includes investigating scientifically effective training methods for music performance and innovative approaches to music education. As a performer, he is also interested in the preservation and transmission of traditional music through applied ethnomusicology. He is a member of the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music (ESCOM), the Society for Education, Music and Psychology Research (SEMPRE), and the British Forum for Ethnomusicology (BFE).
