Research title:
Feeling Fat: Experiencing and Treating Fatness in Early Modern France, 1515-1715
My research explores how fatness was conceptualised, experienced and treated in early modern France. Using a wealth of visual and material culture alongside medical advice and personal records, I aim to address: the extent to which fat was constructed as a dangerous ‘other’; how its representation responded to key shifts in this period (such as colonial expansion and the Reformation); and, where we can identify alternative viewpoints and acts of resistance to negative characterisations or embodiments of fatness.
