Resisting the Camera: The Reconstruction of Beirut on Film
Rita Mahfouz (b. 1985) received a BA and ‘Maîtrise’ in Film Studies from Holy Spirit University of Kaslik in 2006 and 2008 respectively; and an MA in Visual Arts from the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (Alba), University of Balamand, in 2018. Mahfouz has a background in film and worked as a Video editor since 2006, on a number of films, namely documentaries and experimental short films. In 2018, she started to create lens-based artworks (in video and photography) and had shown her work in a number of local and international film festivals (Lebanese Film Festival; Sharjah Film Platform, UAE; Arquiteturas Film Festival, Portugal; RPM Fest, USA; VAFA, China; VideoBardo, Argentina), and art exhibitions (Beirut Art Center, Sursock Museum, CICA Museum, South Koera). Mahfouz has taught Video Editing and Video Making courses in three Lebanese universities, the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts, ALBA; Holy Spirit University, Kaslik; and Antonine University. She is currently pursuing a practice-based PhD at the University of Edinburgh.
My interest falls at the intersection of film/photography theory, art history, and urban/spatial studies. I'm particularly driven by the spatial regulations that govern images and cities, particularly the photographic representation of cities in distress.
