Biography
Rachael is a Lecturer in Architectural Design and Programme Director of the BA/MA Architecture Programme. She has taught on the undergraduate Architecture programme for over 20 years contributing to design and professional practice courses.
She completed an MA(Hons) and BArch in Architecture at the University of Edinburgh and became a registered architect in 2002. Rachael has experience of practice in the UK and Finland, including 15 years with Malcolm Fraser Architects in Edinburgh. Whilst at MFA she led and assisted on housing, arts and commercial projects at all stages of design and construction process. One of these projects Dance Base was shorlisted for the Stirling Prize in 2002.
Rachael is an External Examiner at Reading University and external thesis supervisor at Oslo School of Architecture and Design.
Rachael's main teaching focus is the development of research-led architectural design studios. She has co-taught a series of design studios in third and fourth year of the undergraduate programme as well as writing and leading large cohort pre-honours courses.
Rachael has a particular interest in natural materials; their lifecycles, sourcing, specification and the impact that this has on landscape, craftspeople and building users. She co-authored the highly successful 4th year 'Timber Studio' with Jamie Henry. Student work from this studio has gone on to win the AJ Student Prize, RIBA Bronze Medal Commendations, the RIBA Serjeant Drawing Prize, RIAS best Undergraduate Student and the Edinburgh Architectural Association JR McKay Medal.
