Decolonising a Profession: Built Heritage Conservation and Management in Post-colonial Egypt

Biography

Lama Said is an architect specialising in the historic built environment. She is a SGSAH-funded PhD candidate in Architecture and tutor the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of Edinburgh. Her research problematises the impact of colonialism on heritage conservation and management in post-colonial Egypt. Lama is currently undertaking an internship at National Museum Scotland where she is helping to develop, organise and deliver consultation workshops on Egyptian heritage with the Egyptian community in Scotland.

As Manager of Continuing Education at ICCROM (2018-2022), Lama developed capacity building activities and coordinated the joint MSc programme in Conservation Management of Cultural Heritage with the University of Sharjah. While teaching at Alexandria university (2011-2018), she also worked part-time as an architect and researcher at MuseTech, a firm that specialises in museography and museum design. Lama obtained her BSc in Architecture from Alexandria University and her MSc in Architectural Conservation from the University of Edinburgh on a Chevening Scholarship.
