Katie Braid is a fashion illustrator and communicator who teaches within the Fashion Programme, School of Design.
Katie’s illustrative work seeks to open conversation around traditional notions of beauty and unrealistic body depictions typically associated with the drawn fashion image. Katie takes an expressive approach to the drawn fashion figure, celebrating the imperfection, individuality and vulnerability of the direct mark. Her work an exploration of the limited parameters historically associated with fashion illustration and progressing a much more inclusive and authentic approach to who is seen in the drawn fashion image.
An alumni of Edinburgh College of Art, on completion of her MA in Fashion Design Katie worked in varied roles across the fashion and textiles industry before returning to ECA in a teaching capacity.
In 2024, Katie was the recipient of the FIDA 'Fashion Illustration and Drawing Arts' Award for her illustrative stop-motion work. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including group shows at The National Arts Club in New York, Institute Marangoni Paris, and London College of Fashion Wolfson Gallery. Work featuring in publications including The FIBLE 4:The Fashion Illustration Book (Patrick Morgan), The Fible Triptych v.03 (Patrick Morgan) and How Scotland Dressed the World (Lynne Coleman, Luath Press).
In 2023 Katie undertook the role of part time Fashion Portfolio and illustration Teaching Fellow having previous guest tutored within the fashion programme since 2019.
Katie is a course organiser for Fashion Illustration and Communication, Fashion Analysis for Industry and the Graduate Design Book. Contributing to teaching across all years of the Undergraduate course Katie supports students to visually communicate their creative ideas and personal design identity.
Katie is keen that students build professional practice experience during their study, since her appointment she has played a key role in developing exciting new projects and research opportunities with The National Museum of Scotland, With Love Halston, The St James Quarter and The National Galleries of Scotland.
In 2024 Katie was awarded the People of CAHSS Rising Star Award for exceeding expectations, showing great initiative and introducing new and improved ways of working for students.
Externally Katie has delivered drawing workshops and teaching for V&A Dundee, The National Museums of Scotland and The Modern Calligraphy Co.
