Research title:
Hostile Interfaces: Copying and Blankness in Chinese Postinternet Art
My thesis studies artistic practices defined by their negotiation with the conditions of blankness in digital interfaces of the Chinese internet. Focusing on practices emerging after the 2010s, this thesis situates the field within a historical shift away from the body-centric, confrontational avant-garde of the 1990s. The creative individuality and biographical narratives are often replaced by pastiche, a non-critical recycling of existing materials into generic formulas today. I argue that the works selected in the thesis reveal forms of meaning and subjectivity through an acceptance of blankness.
