Research title:
Hostile Interfaces: Copying and Blankness in Chinese Postinternet Art
My thesis studies artistic practices defined by their negotiation with the conditions of blankness in digital interfaces of the Chinese internet. The creative individuality and biographical narratives are often replaced by pastiche, a non-critical recycling of existing materials into generic formulas today. How might this acceptance of blankness be generative? I argue that the works selected in the thesis reveal forms of meaning and subjectivity precisely through copying and blankness.
