Research title:
The Empathetic Gaze: Thinking through photographic and site-specific practice: being and embodied experience in ruinscape and gallery space
Hanqing Ma is a visual artist and practice-led PhD candidate based at The School of Art, ECA, and The University of Edinburgh. His work as an artist and photographer concerns the representation of architectural space and the phenomenon of ruination, combining formats as disparate as large-scale photographic work and site-specific installation.
Hanqing holds an MA in Fine Art Photography from The Royal College of Art in London which he gained after completing a BA in Advertising in Beijing and attending The School of Visual Art in New York in 2015. At the RCA he co-founded the collaborative project ‘Han & Mona’ with artist Mona Yoo (Talbot Rice Resident 19-21). Since 2014, their works have been internationally exhibited at including The Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Camden Arts Centre, The Talbot Rice Gallery, The Royal Scottish Academy, The OCI Museum of Art, JCC Art Center and The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary of Art of South Korea.
Hanqing is a professional member of The Royal Society of Sculptors, The Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop, and is a recipient of awards including the Bloomberg New Contemporaries, The Gilbert Bayes Award, and the RSA John Kinross Scholarship.
