Job title: Honorary Fellow

Email: Patricia.Macdonald@ed.ac.uk

Dr Patricia Macdonald was educated at the University of Edinburgh. She is an environmental researcher, artist-photographer and academic (Honorary Fellow; co-organiser and lecturer in Honours Course on Cultural Landscape; visiting lecturer on environmental history, conservation, perception and iconography; visiting critic for photography- and museum-related projects, Edinburgh University; past External Assessor for MDes (Fine-Art Photography), Edinburgh College of Art).

Her boundary-crossing environmental aerial imagery (and interpretative texts) - made in both editorial and artwork contexts, and in collaboration with Professor Angus Macdonald of ESALA through the Aerographica partnership - is exhibited, published and held in public and private collections internationally. See: www.aerographica.org; www.eca.ed.ac.uk/eca-home/angus-macdonald; https://nationalgalleries.org/collection/artists-a-z/m/artist/patricia-m...; and other links listed below.

Current group exhibitions

Exhibition: 'The View from Here': Scottish National Portrait Gallery

Several of Patricia's aerial images made in collaboration with Angus Macdonald (seen below), are currently on show (October 2016-April 2017) in the National Galleries of Scotland exhibition The View from Here at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh, and the poster for the exhibition features one of these (seen above). See www.nationalgalleries.org (>What's On).

Also currently (December 2016-May 2017, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Exhibition After the Storm includes a time-lapse composite artwork of the Macdonalds' aerial images made in Glen Feshie in the Cairngoms between 1988 and 2016 (also seen below). The starting point for this sequence is one of the images on show in The View from Here

The triptych of aerial images from Glen Feshie shown in After the Storm looks at environmental disturbance and resilience (and forms part of the Macdonalds' ongoing projects The Unwild and Re:Wild). The commission from RBGE for After the Storm also included an article by Patricia Macdonald: 'Disturbance and resilience in a Highland glen', accompanied by further images, of natural regeneration of the Caledonian pinewood, in the eponymous publication for the show (Edwards, Ian, Ed., RBGE, 2017: available from shop in John Hope Gateway, RBGE ). See www.rbge.org.uk; and 'Updates' opposite.

Other recent artwork commissions

Other recent artwork commissions include those for the new Southern General Hospital, Glasgow (2014), and for the High Museum of Art, Atlanta / National Galleries of Scotland (2011-14: ‘Bunkered Terrain: Scottish Golf Landscapes’, part of the ongoing project, ‘The play grounds’, on the ecological effects of leisure landscapes).

Patricia also has considerable experience in the museum and natural-heritage sectors, both as a staff member (Assistant Keeper, National Museums of Scotland) and at board level (Member of Main Board, Scottish Natural Heritage; Trustee, the John Muir Trust; Board Member, Stills Gallery). She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and of the Royal Society of Arts, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and of the Institute for Contemporary Scotland.

She has authored/co-authored ten books, including The Hebrides: An aerial view of a cultural landscape (2010, with Angus Macdonald); Airworks (2001); Once in Europa (1999, with John Berger and Angus Macdonald); Order & Chaos: Views of Gaia (1990); and Shadow of Heaven (1989).
