My research explores James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran and Duke of Châtellerault’s Kinneil House, and his use of material culture as a tool for self-fashioning. Utilising archival evidence in Scottish and French archives, as well as methodologies from architecture and material culture, this thesis delves into Arran's relationship with the French court and how it influenced his artistic and architectural patronage during his tenure as Regent of Scotland.
