Three ECA alumni have won recognition for their work on screen, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Sheffield International Documentary Festival.

Will Anderson, who graduated with a BA (Hons) Animation in 2011, received the Cristal Award for a Commissioned Film at Annecy, for his piece which opened the 2023 Pictoplasma conference. He was a keynote speaker at the contemporary character design and art festival, based in Berlin, and was also commissioned to create the animation. It stars Greg the cat, a digital pet he had been experimenting with in 3D animation software, Blender.

Annecy is, without doubt, the most exciting and eclectic festival in the world celebrating the art of animation. Taking back to Scotland the Cristal for Best Commissioned Film was an honour, and something I’ll likely never forget.

Meanwhile, Inma de Reyes, who graduated in 2018 with an MFA in Film Directing, won the Grand Jury Award for Best International First Feature at Sheffield International Documentary Festival, for The Boy and the Suit of Lights, a film she started and made into a short during her postgraduate studies at ECA.

Filmed over the course of five years, the film follows Borja, a young boy growing up in Castellon, a small town in Spain, where the tradition of bullfighting weighs heavily on his shoulders. His grandfather, Matias, pins his own unfulfilled dreams of becoming a professional bullfighter onto his grandchild with the hopes that it will get the family out of poverty.

The Grand Jury citation said: “The jury has chosen the winning film for its visually stunning reflection on culture and society, told through the journey of a boy finding his way to manhood. It triggers an inner discussion, challenging our ideas about the modern world versus fading traditions and beliefs.”

Duncan Cowles, who graduated with a BA (Hons) Film and Television in 2013, won a special mention in the same category for his film Silent Men, with the observation: “The jury was impressed by the vulnerable approach to a sensitive subject, told in a fresh, open, even humorous tone.”

The awards were announced June 16 at Sheffield’s Crucible Playhouse.

We're thrilled by the success of Inma de Reyes and Duncan Cowles. Both works have been developed, filmed and edited over a long period and have a depth and sensitivity which has been rightly recognised by the jury. Inma started filming The Boy and the Suit of Lights  while she was studying for her Postgraduate at ECA in Documentary Film when she made an award winning short film out of it ("To be a Torero") . She then developed it over some years into this final work. Duncan's film Silent Men reflects his very unique approach to documentary making which combines humour with a searing honesty.
