A photograph of Justine, wearing a dark-coloured suit and striped top, standing in the gallery at the Royal Scottish Academy, in the middle of her sculpture. It is made of a series of giant wooden, interconnected hoops, some painted red, some a natural wood colour. At their highest, the tallest of the hoops are around twice her height.

Alumna Justine Watt has been awarded the most generous of the prizes at this year's Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) New Contemporaries exhibition - one of eight 2024 graduates from Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) to receive awards.

Justine receives the Glenfiddich Artist in Residence Award, which includes £5,000 for a three-month residency and a material allowance of up to £10,000, along with exhibition and purchase opportunities.

She works with unwanted everyday objects, exploring how we might reuse more and throw away less. Her artworks on view in New Contemporaries examine how running away with the circus as a teenager, and not following the artistic path she had originally pursued, shaped her artistic identity.

The RSA New Contemporaries exhibition showcases work selected from the 2024 Graduate Shows of all Scotland's art and architecture colleges.
