Abstract

This talk is part of a book project on the Iberian reception of the legends of transgender saints. It focuses on visual and textual representations of St Eugenia, who, according to legend, lived as a monk (Eugenius) until an accusation of adultery forced him to identify again as a woman.

Biography

Andrew M. Beresford is Professor of Medieval and Renaissance Studies in the School of Modern Languages and Cultures at Durham University, and the Director of the Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art. He has published widely on Spanish hagiography and devotional topics, including Sacred Skin: The Legend of St. Bartholomew in Spanish Art and Literature (Brill, 2020).
