Why ECA?

Firstly, as an undergraduate architecture student educated in China, I have always had a great desire for high-quality architectural education in the U.K. ECA is renowned for its excellence in art and design education, particularly in the fields of architecture and urban design.

Secondly, ECA is a long-established college and is located in the beautiful city of Edinburgh, Scotland, a place full of culture and history that adds a rich context to academic life. As a student with a background in Eastern cultures, the unique culture and environment of Scotland can give me a completely different perspective to understand and create.

In addition, ESALA's philosophical exploration of the nature of architectural design has enabled me to gain a very deep understanding of the significance of architecture, rather than just solving problems from the perspective of methods and tools.

Most importantly, ECA has an international reputation for providing students with a world-class education. I am confident that the ECA learning experience will provide me with a solid foundation for my future career and help me realize my career goals. Therefore, I have no hesitation in choosing ECA as my place of study.

Tell us about your time at ECA

The year I spent at Edinburgh College of Art during my AUD Project was an important stage in my life for which I am full of gratitude and memories. The project not only enriched my knowledge but also broadened my horizons.

During my time at ECA, I was involved in several important projects, both independent research and collaborative teamwork. These projects aimed to develop my critical thinking in design methodology, explore innovative ideas, and develop problem-solving skills in the field of architecture and urban design. The tutors guided me through theoretical case studies, fieldwork, and research, and the practical experience in Edinburgh gave me a better understanding of the complexity of the built environment, laying a solid foundation for my career development.

ECA organized lectures by architectural scholars from all over the world, which enabled me to have access to a lot of cutting-edge academic research and deepened our understanding of the actual operation of the architectural field. The tutors of the ECA workshop provided a variety of specialized equipment and materials and discussed practical methods together during the building process.

Looking back on this time, if I could start again, I would probably be more active in cultivating relationships and expanding my professional network. I believe it might have been more beneficial to actively engage more with fellow students, professors, and industry professionals. I would also have liked to do more field trips and study more sites to help me accumulate and understand more perspectives and approaches. However, I feel very grateful for the opportunities and experiences I have had at ECA. Not only did the programme provide me with a solid foundation in architectural design, but it also fueled my passion for continuous learning and innovation, a passion that has stayed with me throughout my career as an architect in London.

Tell us about your experiences since graduating

My post-graduation practice in London has been full of challenges and opportunities and has been very fulfilling. Leaving the ECA was a mixture of excitement and uncertainty as I was looking forward to utilising the skills I had learned in my future career path, but at the same time, it was also full of uncertainty.

When I left the ECA, I planned to seek a career in the UK architecture and urban design sector to gain more practical experience and gradually develop my area of expertise. I have successfully worked for a leading architectural practice in London and have been involved in several significant projects including high-profile residential, and commercial public buildings and urban design projects in which I have played a key role. My career has developed beyond initial expectations and after graduating I also entered the YAC Architectural Design Competition and the Museum of Modern Art Competition, both of which were well received and resulted in some achievements of which I am very proud.

The ECA has provided me with a solid foundation for my future career. At ECA, I not only gained profound knowledge about architecture and urban design but also developed analytical, creative, and problem-solving skills. These skills have played an important role in my career, enabling me to make informed decisions in complex architectural projects.

All in all, life since graduation has been full of learning and development, and I feel very grateful for the solid foundation and career inspiration that the ECA has provided me with. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead and continue to achieve more in the field of architectural design.
