I always knew that I wanted to study music, I just didn’t know in what capacity. ECA has such a varied programme that it suited me perfectly. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to specialise in, be that musicology, music therapy, performance, sound design or community music. The BMus programme allowed me to explore all of these areas in depth, whilst also introducing me to many fields of study that were previously unknown to me.

The BMus programme has a wealth of excellent modules to explore and enjoy. The Music in the Community programme enabled me to participate (and lead in my last year) in weekly sessions with adults and children who have additional support needs. I was guided by Dee Isaacs and Hugh Nankivell on how to work effectively and cohesively in this entirely new setting, and it was an invaluable learning experience for me.
Improvisation as a Social Process by Raymond MacDonald was another fascinating module that encouraged me to approach the creative practice of music in ways I never would’ve dreamed of.
In my final year I undertook Recital and Composition, both of which proved extremely rewarding projects to work on. They allowed me to work closely with some very influential professors and teachers including Alan Benzie, Gareth Williams and Richard Craig, all of whom I learnt a great deal from.
I also joined the university Symphony and Jazz Orchestra’s, both of which led to many fantastic opportunities travelling and performing around Edinburgh, the UK and Europe.

I felt immensely proud. University can be quite exhausting at times, and at the end I’d given it everything I had. That feeling of graduating in the summer alongside all my friends and family, knowing how much work I’d put in, was an incredibly rewarding one.
My time at ECA helped me realise that my passions lie in the fields of performance and community music. However, before I jump headfirst into a career in either I’ve been taking some time off, reflecting on the past few years and also what my next steps may be.
In the meantime, I’m working part-time in a cafe, gigging around the central belt with various bands and my newly formed trio project! I’ve also been pursuing my community music interests participating in projects around the city.

I would strongly advise going in with an open mind. There’s so many weird and wonderful projects happening out there, so go and seek them out. Get involved with things that maybe you wouldn’t naturally be drawn to. Be brave in your decision-making. Try not to compare yourself with your peers, it’s never healthy.
Don’t be personally offended by constructive criticism, the ECA is a wonderful environment where you can grow so much by listening to those around you - it’s ok if you’re wrong sometimes.
Try participating in some of the amazing societies that are on offer.
And most importantly, don’t forget to call your mum!
