Coming to Edinburgh from the US, Madison was interested in ECA for its renowned programmes and passionate focus on sustainability. Having previously studied Interior Design at another institution, Madison was able to develop her skills in sustainable design here at ECA, enabling her to explore different avenues of urban and architectural design. Ultimately this led towards a passion for Landscape Architecture and Permaculture design which has since opened opportunities to work for prominent firms such as Arup.

Why ECA?

As an international student from the US, I enrolled at ECA seeking a platform to refine my post-BFA Interior Design degree and contribute to creating a more sustainable world. The MSc Advanced Sustainable Design program captured my interest, fuelled by my growing passion for sustainability. The UK, particularly institutions like UoE ECA, showcased impactful work and initiatives aligned with genuine sustainability principles. Eager to thrive in a creative community, I was drawn to Edinburgh not only for its beauty but also for ECA's renowned programs and facilities. Despite the challenges of transitioning from my previous University (The Savannah College of Art and Design) and moving abroad during the back end of a global pandemic, choosing ECA was an easy decision as it provided the ideal environment for furthering my education and applying my skills to make a positive global impact. Especially at a time where many of the world’s pressing issues are at the forefront.

Despite its brief 12-month duration, my degree program proved to be an intense and diverse experience. The backdrop of emerging from COVID-19 restrictions added an extra layer of complexity as much of our learning occurred online. Despite the unconventional university experience, I embraced the situation by engaging in extracurricular activities and immersing myself in the vibrant city of Edinburgh. As the postgraduate representative for the Edinburgh College of Art, I found this role to be both a valuable social outlet and an informative window into university affairs.

While our cohort was virtual, we successfully collaborated using the new tools at our disposal. Midway through the MSc program, I discovered my passion for Sustainable Design extended beyond building interiors. Opting for elective courses in Landscape Architecture, I fused my existing architectural knowledge with a new understanding of sustainable design, expanding my focus to the earth itself.

This realization significantly influenced my dissertation, where I developed a framework for Urban Acupuncture as a design tool for policymakers, urban designers, and communities. By exploring the intersection of human and nature, I sought to demonstrate how minimal interventions could create a ripple effect of positive change, enhancing the well-being of both people and the planet, fostering sustainable urban environments.

Though my journey through the MSc program was unconventional, it provided me with a comprehensive knowledge base that unites my passions for human influence and environmental well-being.

Upon leaving ECA, I decided to embark on a gap year. After navigating two years of a global pandemic and completing my MSc, I sensed it was an opportune moment to pause and rediscover the joy of creativity. During this hiatus, I collaborated with a company dedicated to supporting female creative businesses in Edinburgh, indulged in personal artistic pursuits, embarked on inspirational travels, delved into my own interests, and secured certification as a LEED Green Associate.

Uncertain about the trajectory of my career, I deliberately looked beyond the confines of interior design. My exploration led me to a literal shift outwards as I transitioned into the field of Landscape Architecture.

I have formed a passion for sustainable food systems and sustainable landscape, this drove me to study Permaculture. I recently acquired a certification in Permaculture design, and I look forward to applying this to my future work.

Currently, I contribute my skills to Arup, a firm renowned for its commitment to shaping a better world. This new professional chapter reflects my desire to extend the impact of my work, aligning with Arup's ethos of meaningful contribution to global betterment.

“Choosing ECA was an easy decision as it provided the ideal environment for furthering my education and applying my skills to make a positive global impact”.
