Forget the study, the books, and the armchair. Thinking is not a lone, individual act but a social process, embedded in what I have called “the social buzz”: the constant implicit discussion – agreement, disagreement, qualification, passionate opining – of ideas by the people constituting the social environment of the thinker. Three aspects can be derived from that collective nature of thought.

Histories of image production, reception and even exhibition are diversifying across the globe, and with the infinite expansion of digital media, representations are evolving too. Joan Smith, Acting Head of Art at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), and Susie Wilson, a Centre for Open Learning Art and Design Tutor, have collaborated on an exhibition at Surgeons’ Hall Museums, telling the story of the women who cared for the sick and wounded in the heart of the war zones.

Tiago Torres-Campos was selected as one of five winners in the LA+ Iconoclast ideas competition for Central Park in New York. There were 193 entries from 30 countries to the competition which invited participants to reimagine and redesign the park for the 21st Century, after a presumed eco-terrorist attack.

Previously a printmaker, Daniel Cook discovered that film was his passion during his time at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA). Daniel's Master's short 'The King and I' enjoyed award success on the film festival circuit and his new moving image project 'Glasshouse' was recently exhibited at the Embassy Gallery.

It was the work of an Animation alumna that encouraged Laura Jayne Hodkin to come to ECA. Now, having graduated last year and picking up numerous awards for her final film 'Nailbiter' and follow-up 'Hayley and Joanna', Laura shares her experiences of ECA and tells us what is next.
