2020/21 talks
For 2020/21, the School of Art is delighted to welcome a collaboration between the New Art Exchange (NAE) in Nottingham and the School of Art, in the development of our Friday Talk series. This series of talks are a critical part of the engagement our students have with practicing artists, curators and researchers, every year. Over the years the school has presented talks by some of the most interesting emerging and established artists, and through workshops have introduced our students to new ways of thinking about their practice. In 2019 I began a conversation with the one of the curators of NAE Cindy Sissokho and the Diorector of NAE Skinder Hundal about a potential collaboration between our two organisations. The discussions centred around, who the arts were for, where was diversity represented in education and within cultural institutions, and importantly, how can universities be more inclusive and representative of the many different voices within the arts.
We are delighted to have a selection of incredible artists speaking and working with our students over the next two semesters, and very grateful for the work of NAE in helping make this possible. Our plan is to continue to work together to make sure that art is representative of all who contribute to both the practice and theory of contemporary arts.
Unlike previous years the Friday talks will not take place on the ECA campus, instead, the lectures will be made available to view online on the Friday morning of each talk and then for the rest of the academic year. Please follow the Media Hopper link to watch the videos of our speakers on each of the dates listed.
- Dr Linda O Keeffe Head of Art, ECA
NAE values art education and is keen to support students studying the arts, be that through higher education or in non-institutional environments. It is vital to offer ‘reality insights’ to support the academic interrogation, learning and research that students undertake. These insights come in many forms, from practical application to hearing from dynamic artist practitioners; the lived experiences of these artists and practitioners of colour capture and offer the full spectrum of life’s contexts.
In a society where localisation means to be global, and in the ever increasingly diverse space we enter, negotiate and engage with, we need a deeper collective appreciation of Britain’s considerable cultural knowledge, informed by and cultivated from people across the continents of the world. NAE is therefore delighted to be co-curating a series of presentations and practical sessions with Edinburgh College of Art at Edinburgh University. It is vital that such partnerships exist in order to enrich and enliven progressive educational and arts sectors.
- Skinder Hundal MBE Director/CEO of New Art Exchange
