Research title: Develop Design Principles for Primary School Outdoor Environment to Nurture Children’s Creativity.

In today’s life, children’s free time is increasingly filled with predetermined games. This results in a single dimensional child who grows-up with a lack of ability for imaginative and creative play. Creativity is, however, essential in many domains of today’s life, both at the individual level and societal level (Sternberg and Lubart, 1996). It is not only needed for the arts nowadays, but in all different fields such as economics, business and science (Sternberg and Lubart, 1996). Research shows that humans' creative ability depends on childhood's fantasizing power (Krippner, 1999). My PhD topic aims to develop design principles for primary school playgrounds to enhance children's creativity. In fact I am focusing on how each of the different types of primary school playgrounds and outdoor environments influence a child's creative thinking abilities and behaviours.
