My research interests concern the practice of illustration for picturebooks: specifically: the methodology of collecting images and ephemera to form a bank of data that I process to construct illustration work for picture books. I aim to develop a methodological 'toolkit' for making illustration that is representative of multicultural societies that children in the UK are growing up in and comprehending. These approaches are designed for practicing illustrators to consider cultural inclusivity in their artwork. My ideas on what might constitute intercultural illustration for picture books draws from my experience running art workshops for families and the universal qualities of stories. My main question is: if children use images to 'see' and make sense of themselves in the world around them, how can all children see themselves in illustrations, when all children are different?
