Dr Jules Rawlinson designs sounds, visuals and interactions, and is Programme Director for MSc. Design and Digital Media.
Jules graduated from the University of Edinburgh's MSc Sound Design programme with Distinction in 2006, and was awarded a PhD in Composition by the University of Edinburgh in 2011. He studied Combined Arts at Sunderland University, and was a founder at Civic, one of Scotland's leading digital agencies.
He has significant commercial experience of online design and development for high profile public sector clients including the Scottish Government, NHS Scotland and Scottish Qualifications Authority
Arts projects have included sound installations and performances, reactive graphics and interactives for the BBC, New Media Scotland, Glenmorangie, Cybersonica, Future of Sound / Future of Light and the revived Radiophonic Workshop.
Jules performs with live electronics and collaborated with Matthew Collings on 'Requiem for Edward Snowden', which blends live electronics with a chamber trio and realtime visuals.The work was developed with support from New Media Scotland’s Alt-w Fund with investment from Creative Scotland, and material support from the Reid School of Music. The work premiered to a capacity audience at ECA's Reid Hall, and a second performance was staged at the CCA by Cryptic Nights. It was selected by Creative Scotland as part of their Made In Scotland Showcase at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2015, and was also one of the highlights of Utrecht's Uitfeest/Muziekweek in September 2015.
Jules teaches across the MSc Design and Digital Media and MSc Sound Design programmes, and contributes to ESALA's undergraduate courses and dissertation supervision. He has also tutored and lectured on courses for MSc Digital Composition and Performance delivered by the Reid School of Music.
Jules is currently investigating graffiti as graphic score or 'signature sounds', and has presented this work at Seeing Sound Research Symposium, INTER/actions Symposium, International Conference on Live Interfaces (ICLI) and Sonorities. His work 'Please Use The Tramps Provided' was selected as one of the centerpiece performances of Sonorities 2015.
He is a founding member of the LLEAPP network (Laboratory for Laptop and Electronic Audio Performance Practice), which has fostered an ongoing and reciprocal series of workshops and events at a number of UK institutions.
