I am currently working on a project funded by an ESRC Impact Grant that aims to provide resources and training to enable educational professionals to use a musical activities programme (MAP) designed for children with dyslexia (Overy, 2008) to support children with dyslexia in the classroom.

My Ph.D. was funded by a Thomas Laing Reilly Ph.D. Scholarship in Music and was based between the Reid School of Music, Department of Psychology and Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. My research investigated the potential of musical activities to improve phonological and literacy skills in children with dyslexia, as well as the possible neural substrates underlying such facilitative effects.

Prior to my Ph.D. I completed an M.Sc. by Research at the University of Edinburgh, during which I conducted a collaborative study that was the first to use diffusion tensor MRI to investigated the neuroplasticity effects of music-cued motor training (Moore et al., 2017). Before this I completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Edinburgh where I was awarded the Niecks Essay Prize for my Final Year Dissertation entitled "Does Musical Training-Induced Brain Plasticity have the Potential to Aid the Recovery of Motor and Language Function in Stroke Survivors?"

I am interested in the potential cognitive and health benefits as well as the neuroplasticity effects of musical learning. My M.Sc. and Ph.D. work spans the domains of music, psychology, neuroscience and education and has focused on the potential of music to support movement and language acquisition. This work has included brain-imaging studies using diffusion tensor MRI and music intervention work in schools with dyslexic children.

I have also previously been involved in several collaborative projects both locally and internationally. I have collaborated with members of Harvard Medical School/Boston Children's Hospital for a study investigating auditory processing abilities in dyslexic musicians (Zuk et al., 2017) and I have also been involved in a collaborative project between the IMHSD and Scottish Chamber Orchestra, which investigated the potential of interactive music workshops to improve well-being in people living with dementia.
