Forget the study, the books, and the armchair. Thinking is not a lone, individual act but a social process, embedded in what I have called “the social buzz”: the constant implicit discussion – agreement, disagreement, qualification, passionate opining – of ideas by the people constituting the social environment of the thinker. Three aspects can be derived from that collective nature of thought.

This talk explores the complex ways in which the remediation of printed images shaped Renaissance architectural practice. It argues that commonplace acts of copying, processes of direct translation, and even seemingly mundane, monotonous activities such as the manual replication of printed treatises constitute an overlooked cultural technique, one that became integral to the dynamic practices of architectural design that developed in the sixteenth century.

'The experience of light and darkness is central to all architectural experience. Responding to Romantic accounts of gothic gloom, scholars in the last hundred years have characterised gothic architecture as a celebration of light. But what political agendas lie behind these shifting perceptions, and can their accuracy be measured? How were natural and artificial light regulated in the gothic cathedral, and how were buildings experienced at night?

Exploring regional legacies of colonialism, post-colonialism and internationalism across the late 18th, 19th and 20th centuries is an ongoing concern of architectural historians. Scholarship in the field has examined connections between Australia and New Zealand, and Europe, America and Asia, especially through the lenses of migration and travel.
