After a successful launch in November 2015, the Canvas team have published the second issue of their art journal with the theme “Ideas of Beauty”. Canvas is supported by the School of History of Art at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) and the History of Art Society.
Since launching, the Canvas team has grown to contain more than 30 students from a variety of subject areas around the University of Edinburgh. It was started by Emma Searle, an International Relations student who was recently elected to be the president of the History of Art society for the 2016/17 academic year.
“I’m not at the ECA campus, and I really wanted to know what was going on at ECA,” said Emma, “and I thought the university could really benefit from that. So I wanted to start a journal that both ECA and other students from other degrees could get involved with.”
Emma will be stepping down as editor-in-chief at Canvas over the summer, and Gemma Batchelor has been elected to take over the role. Gemma is on the Fine Art – MA programme at ECA, and is currently a member of the production team on the journal.
“There were photographs looking at the female body in different clothing, there were landscape photographs, articles related to fashion, articles related to 19th Century art in France,” said Gemma, “we take submissions from any area, so there was also a submission from a student on a science programme writing on the beauty of molecules.”
“I would love to see it expanding, and more students getting involved, and more people reading it” said Emma, “It would be really nice for other art societies to also have an interest in the journal and to get involved with us.”
Canvas Issue II: Ideas of Beauty will be available at the 2016 Degree Show. You can find a digital version of the journal on the Canvas website.
