A graduating student on the Product Design - BA (Hons) programme at Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) has won the New Designers Pentland Brands Award.
Tereza Astilean, whose project Verpakt is a transformable jacket / sleeping bag, will now take up a paid, two-month study programme in the Design Talent Team at Pentland, the name behind some of the world’s best sports, outdoor and fashion brands, including Red or Dead, Boxfresh and Speedo.
Tereza’s work uses recycled carpet-waste fibres, which would otherwise end up in landfill, and combines them with waxed cotton in a low cost thermal jacket and backpack which convert into a sleeping bag.
The judges called Verpakt a “novel idea” and “a fantastically researched project that has been made from industrial carpet waste that is upcycled to create a new innovative product”.

An award-winning year for Product Design
Tereza Astilean is one of 18 graduating Product Design students from ECA showing their work on Stand FP56 at New Designers. Fifteen of the designers have just completed their BA (Hons) degree; three are on our MFA programme.
Many of the group have had award successes this year for a body of work described by Programme Director, Chris Speed, as “a suite of artefacts that challenge what product design is, as it evolves from making things for mass consumption to making things that we value”.
At the ECA Degree Show in June, Sorcha Sutherland won the Scottish Glass Society Student Award for her Maker’s Print collection, which was formed in clay, before being 3D-scanned and printed and moulded for glass. At New Designers, Sorcha was among high-street retailer John Lewis’ top picks, while Toby Starr was selected by NotOnTheHighStreet.com.
In February 2016, Sophie Butchart - whose work focuses on innovative products for foreign language learning - was a Highly Commended finalist in the Scottish Institute for Enterprise ‘Fresh Ideas’ competition.
ECA at New Designers
New Designers is the annual showcase of the most promising graduate talents from Britain’s leading design courses. Part Two runs from 6th - 9th July 2016 at the Business Design Centre, London.
Last week, in Part One of the exhibition, we were represented by our Jewellery & Silversmithing - BA (Hons) and MFA students, and our Textiles - BA (Hons) students.
ECA has an excellent track record at New Designers. Last year, the Weston Beamor Award went to MFA student, Alexandra Von Trapp and Karen Elizabeth Donovan returned as a One Year On designer, having won an internship awarded by The Goldsmiths' Company in 2014.
In 2013, Kelly Munro won the Goldsmiths’ Company Award for Silversmithing, Georgina Leung was the New Designer of the Year runner up, Polly Collins was awarded the Contemporary British Silversmiths’ Best in Silver Award, and Elizabeth Campbell and Sally Morrison achieved first and second place, respectively, in the Association for Contemporary Jewellery Mark Fenn Award.
