Sam Van Zoest’s short film raises awareness of traffic incidents and road safety.

A Film & TV – BA (Hons) 4th year student has won Best Director at the Care Film Festival in Monza, Italy. Sam Van Zoest, currently in his 4th year of studies, directed Close Your Eyes, Paro when he was in his 3rd year, during an exchange in Bangalore, India. It was his examination piece at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, with a brief to make a short film on the topic of road safety as part of an awareness raising campaign. The film is about a three-year-old girl, Paro, who witnesses an accident, and whose father’s heroic actions have grave consequences for her.

Close Your Eyes, Paro has been well received at festivals, and has also been awarded Best Cinematography at the Great Message International Film Festival, Pune.

“I like to travel and make movies in different places – I have made films in the UK, the Netherlands Germany, Thailand, and now India as well, and I want to keep doing this,” said Sam, “This film was part of the exchange offered by Srishti and Edinburgh College of Art. I experienced a completely different culture and met some amazing people that I would never have met otherwise. In India I employed the skills I had learnt in Edinburgh, while also gaining new experience in working in a different place, and in a different language.”
