Rachel Maclean: Spite Your Face

  • Where? Talbot Rice Gallery
  • When? 24 February - 5 May 2018
  • Price? Free!

Returning to Scotland after being commissioned for the 2017 Venice Biennale, Rachel Maclean’s work ‘Spite Your Face’ is making its grand UK debut at Talbot Rice Gallery, the University's art gallery. The Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) graduate pulls inspiration from Italian folk tale ‘the Adventures of Pinocchio’ – definitely not the Disney version! – and the over-the-top, celebrity-obsessed nature of society in her 37-minute looped film which has no beginning, middle or end. Her bold and thought-provoking art is sure to stay with you long after viewing.

Hidden Gems

  • Where? City Art Centre
  • When? 7 October 2017 - 13 May 2018
  • Price? Free!

Since the City Art Centre’s collection accumulates to over 4,800 individual works of art, it can be expected that some are often forgotten about and rarely displayed. The aptly titled ‘Hidden Gems’ exhibition showcases art that is tricky to fit into existing displays, rare treasures from famous artists or artists who, over time, have faded from the spotlight, as well as pieces that were simply never appreciated. The exhibition is sure to be an intriguing one as it is truly a mixed bag – featuring a wide variety of media dating from the 18th Century to the present day, with artists both familiar and new to the Centre.
