As a new generation of students join Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) we catch up with some of our 2016 graduates who offer their advice to new students and recent graduates.

 

Daniel Leyland - Painting

In 2017 alone, Danny has taken part in three exhibitions, including RSA: New Contemporaries, and continues working on the poetry-led event 'Vine Box'

Douglas Stevens - Fine Art

A lot has happened since Douglas Stevens left ECA. A move to Norway, a return to Edinburgh to take part in a major exhibition and a journey north to a farm in Perthshire where he is currently turning a derelict barn into a studio.

Farhana Jiwa - Architecture

Growing up in Kenya, Farhana Jiwa developed a desire to improve people’s quality of life through architecture. This lifelong aspiration led her to study Architecture – BA.

Jessica Hui - Music

Jessica Hui enjoyed her time within the supportive environment at the Reid School of Music so much that she is back this year to study Musicology.


"I had the best time with my classmates; they were the most amazing, talented and diverse group of people. I was lucky to have them in my journey at Edinburgh and we still keep in touch to this day."

Lama Said, 2016 Architectural Conservation - MSc alumna

Lama Said - Architectural Conservation

Since graduating from Architectural Conservation Lama Said has gone on to work at Alexandria University in Egypt. Lama shares her fond memories of the weekly field trips with her classmates and gives advice to new students.

Lily Bailie - Performance Costume

Since graduating last year, Lily has worked on the seventh season of Game of Thrones as a costume trainee and is about to go back for season eight. 

Matthew Barber - Textiles

Textiles alumnus Matthew Barber was awarded the Burberry Design Scholarship allowing him to continue his practice at the Royal College of Art alongside an internship in the design team at Burberry. 

Megan Rea - Painting

As she prepares for her solo show in Newcastle next year Megan tells us about the architecture that drew her to study at ECA and the inspiration she found when she got here.

Robert John Henderson - Photography

Robert John Henderson combines his previous expertise in organisational psychology with the photography practice he honed at ECA, to create what he describes as a 'synergistic combination' of careers.

Shalini Moodley - Urban Strategies and Design

Since graduating, Shali has returned home to Cape Town to study the city as a post-apartheid metropolis.

Tania Ortega - Design Informatics

As a child, 2016 alumna Tania Ortega dreamt of studying at a renowned university. After completing her BA in Industrial Design in Mexico, Tania decided to pursue her dream, leading her to Edinburgh.

Vera Babida - Animation

Since graduating in 2016, Vera Babida has been shortlisted for several awards including a BAFTA 'New Talent' nomination and has been featured on It’s Nice That’s 'The Graduate 2016'.
