Two surrealist films by Franciszka & Stefan Themerson, introduced by Karolina Koczynska.

Franciszka and Stefan Themerson were partners and creative collaborators, and their short films represent a significant contribution to Polish animation, demonstrating their diverse approaches to film-making. The Adventures of a Good Citizen (1937) is ‘an irrational humoresque’ that follows two men carrying a wardrobe, while The Eye and the Ear (1945) offers an abstract approach to animation that serves as a visual interpretation of four songs composed by Karol Szymanowski.

The films will be introduced by Karolina Koczynska, a second-year PhD student researching ‘artes’, a group of surrealists artists working in Lwów in the 1930s. Her work focuses on the concept of myth as a meaning making as it was explored by the artists. A discussion will follow the screening.

This event is part of the Dada & Surrealism Research Group programme. No booking is required.
