The North Lands 20 conference connects ideas, formed after the industrial revolution, to our present technological time. North Lands is Scotland's centre of excellence in glass making.
The conference will consider our continued relationship with nature, materials, making and the body in a progressive way. It is centred on people whose practice or research engages with the following topics: both traditional and non-traditional glassmaking techniques, merging technology and nature, changes in society after the industrial revolution, the shape of design and making in our future lives, the body in relation to materials and manual skills.
Speakers will raise questions such as: Is making empowering? Are studio glassmakers still inventing new technologies? 200 years after the industrial revolution is the handmade vs the machine made still relevant? Is it important to keep old techniques alive? And can technology bring you closer to nature?
