Led by Michael Fend (King’s College London)
Michael's talk investigates opera from a philosophical perspective. Neither in the past or at present have opera and philosophy made natural bedfellows. Why not?
Michael will discuss some of the difficulties involved in earlier attempts in writing a philosophy of opera by Gary Tomlinson (Metaphysical Song. An Essay on Opera), Peter Kivy (Osmin’s Rage and other writings), and Slavoi Žižek and Milan Dolar (Opera’s Second Death), before offering his own perspective on Wagner, Nietzsche and nineteenth-century Italian opera.
Free to attend. Open to all.
Part of the Music Research Seminar Series 2017/18.
