Modern computing power is enormous. While it has been harnessed to great effect in the case of computer graphics rendering, audio rendering for applications in sound synthesis and 3D virtual acoustics has seen less development.

A historical overview of digital sound synthesis techniques will be followed by a presentation of some modern developments in simulation-based audio rendering, creative applications, and links to large-scale parallel computing. Sound examples and musical excerpts will be played through an 8-channel sound system.
