Join the School of History of Art for the next talk in the Research Seminar Series - 'An Exclusive Fashion? Reconsidering the Socio-historical Background of Akita Ranga Painting' by Katharina S. Rode-Kaya. This seminar will be chaired by Dr Halle O'Neal.
Drawing on European prints and Chinese painting, the so-called Akita Ranga School produced literally outstanding works with a visual language that appealed to a particular audience within the political center of Edo in the late 18th century. This talk will examine the group with a two-pronged approach as a freak fashion related to the transcultural taste of a select group of high-status figures within the confines of Edo high society.
This talk will be in person only. The seminar will be followed by a drinks reception in the John Higgitt Gallery.
