We invite S5 and S6 pupils to join us for the 2018 ECA Summer School of Imagination! Come along and get to know Edinburgh College of Art, while learning about the famous Scottish Surrealist artist, Eduardo Paolozzi and making your own Surrealist art.
You will have the opportunity to work alongside lecturers in the college, explore different parts of Edinburgh University, work in ECA studios and get advice on applying to art college. We will provide lunch each day and materials for the sessions.
9:45am: Welcome to ECA | Dr Emily Goetsch
Location: University of Edinburgh Main Library, George Square, EH8 9LJ
A brief introduction to Edinburgh College of Art and the Summer School sessions.
10am - 12pm: Mosaic Ruins: Talk & handling session of Mosaic Arch Fragments by Sir Eduardo Paolozzi | Liv Laumenech (University of Edinburgh, Special Collections)
Location: University of Edinburgh Main Library, Centre for Research Collections, George Square, EH8 9LJ
Uncover the story of the mosaic arches from Tottenham Court Road Tube Station. Find out about what happened to them and what’s planned for these fragments at the University.
12pm - 1pm: Lunch
Lunch will be provided in the cafe of the University’s Main Library. There will also be an informal advice session for students who want to chat about career aims and options within the arts, and for students who intend to prepare, or are already producing, Art and Design portfolios.
1pm - 3pm: Printmaking: Fragments, Collage, and Printed Matter | Gordon Brennan (ECA, School of Art)
Location: ECA Main Building, 74 Lauriston Place, EH3 9DF
Collage was one of Paolozzi’s main means of expression. This practical workshop will focus on combining found material, printed ephemera, and simple prints to allow you to make a series of collages and constructed artworks. Materials and equipment will be provided.
10am - 12pm: This is not Jewellery | Kathy Vones (School of Design)
Location: Hunter Building, 74 Lauriston Place, EH3 9DF
A two-hour hands-on workshop where you will make an item of jewellery. Please bring along 3-6 objects you’ve found (at home or outside). We will transform your found objects either by collage and/or re-assembly, thereby changing their visual meaning. Be prepared that you might cut up and/or dissemble your found object so don’t bring anything precious!
12pm - 1pm: Lunch
Lunch will be provided in the ECA Café, along with an informal advice session for students who want to chat about career aims and options within the arts.
1pm - 3pm: Phonotrope Workshop | Jared Taylor (ECA, School of Design)
Location: North-East Studio Building, J03, 74 Lauriston Place, EH3 9DF
Using record players and digital cameras, you will learn how to reinvent the illusion of life that intrigued the Surrealists. There will be an opportunity for an informal discussion of portfolios for application to Animation courses, and a tour of ECA's animation facilities at the end.
