This Bataille Reading Workshop, based at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Reading Room at Modern Two, will be led by Hailey Maxwell (University of Glasgow). The Workshop will consist of an Introductory Talk on Bataille and a discussion of the set reading (see below). It will conclude with an exploration of Bataille-related books and documents in the Archives and Special Book collection, including the archives of Roland Penrose and Gabrielle Keiller. This part of the Workshop will take place with Kerry Watson (Librarian - Modern and Contemporary Art, National Galleries of Scotland).
Hailey Maxwell is a PhD candidate completing her thesis ‘Art of Atheology: Georges Bataille and his Collaborators in the Interwar Period’ at the University of Glasgow. She graduated from Glasgow’s MLitt Art, Politics, Transgression: 20th Century-Avant Gardes in 2014, winning the Andrew Millar Prize for her dissertation.
