In its fourth year, BOOKMARKS artists’ bookfair will again provide a stimulating platform for visitors to explore artists’ books and zines made by practitioners from across Scotland and further afield. Exploring the artists’ book in its broadest sense, BOOKMARKS is a first stop for those interested in bookmaking as an artistic practice.

The fair is accompanied by an eclectic selection of talks and workshops.

All events are free.

SLICEFORMS: Geometric Paper Pop-Ups | 1.45pm - 3.15pm

With Ana McKellar

Create your own 3D pop-up book using a technique called sliceforming – explore how mathematics can inspire art and learn how you can design your own pop up pieces from scratch. Run in association with the School of Mathematics.

Images for words | 2pm - 3.15pm

With Mhairi Braden and Saskia Cameron

This workshop delves into the process behind taking a text and making it visual, be it comics, graphic novels, picture books, poetry or the artist’s book. We will be going behind the scenes of illustrated texts to the methods, the roughs and the rationale, to provide a framework for making words into images. There will be discussion, demonstration and a practical element to this workshop.

Drawing on Old Books: What can the Centre for Research Collections do for you? | 3.45pm - 4.15pm

The University has amazing rare books, archives, manuscripts, art and museum collections, which are available to students, staff and the general public. The talk will be an introduction to the collections, especially for artists interested in prints and book making.

Unfinished Zine Club | 3.45pm - 5pm

Join the Edinburgh Zine Library at their Unfinished Zine Club, an opportunity to talk all things zine, connect with other zine makers, and sit and work on zine projects at any stage of development with the support and advice of zine library members. There'll be plenty of the Edinburgh Zine Library collection for inspiration. It doesn't matter if you're a zine newbie or accomplished zine maker, whether you've just got an initial idea or you're not sure how you want to reproduce your finished zine. Unfinished Zine Club is a warm, safe and supportive space to share ideas, scissors and pritt sticks!

The Pupil Sphere | 4.45pm - 5.15pm

Daniel Ainsworth presents the development of The Pupil Sphere, on how he took it from being a university module and made it into an international photography network.

BOOKMARKS Bumper Zine Launch | 6pm

The BOOKMARKS Bumper Zine collates content from the 60 different groups of artists and designers who are stallholders at BOOKMARKS Artist’s Book and Zine Fair 2018 at the Fire Station, Edinburgh College of Art. It is a 'zine-in-a-day' project, with all content generated, printed and bound on the day of the fair.

Contributors will be asked to respond to the theme of Fahrenheit 451, a dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury that presents a future American society where books are outlawed and ‘firemen’ burn any that are found.
