Led by Dr Otto Saumarez Smith (University of Oxford)
This talk presents the first historical account of the spectacular growth of British leisure centres throughout the 1970s. Leisure Centres help us to revise a view of local government in this period as being sclerotic and moribund; instead the welfare state is seen as expanding its purview and adapting in response to a range of issues.
Part of the 2017-18 Architectural History and Theory Seminar Series. The seminars are free and everyone is welcome.
