Join History of Art for the next in the Research Seminar Series chaired by Dr Maryam Ohadi-Hamadani.

This lecture will be hybrid. Please book your ticket for attendance in person or online. Further details on how to access the lecture will be sent to you following booking.

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception in the Higgitt Gallery.

This talk is based on my current book project exploring the physical, psychological, and conceptual ramifications of bordering in works by artists whose practices have engaged with processes of abstraction in Britain since the 1970s. As well as giving an overview of the project, it will focus on a cluster of works made by the sculptor Veronica Ryan.

Catherine Spencer is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Art History, University of St Andrews. Her current book project is titled Abstract Subjects: Art, Borders, and ‘Britain’, and with Amy Tobin and Maryam Ohadi-Hamadani she is co-editing Grassroots Artmaking: Political Struggle and Activist Art in the UK, 1960–Present (forthcoming, Bloomsbury Academic).
