Programme: Painting - BA (Hons)

Year: 2015

With the 2016 Degree Show over and our final year students preparing to graduate, we look back at last year's leavers and their many and varied successes. In this article we catch up with Painting - BA (Hons) graduate Iona Roberts.

Since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art (ECA), a number of exciting opportunities have come up for me.

In my final year at the College, my tutors encouraged me to apply for the Drawing Year at the Royal Drawing School in London. I did so, and I was offered a full scholarship for 2015/16.

At the 2015 Degree Show my work was selected for the RSA NEW CONTEMPORARIES, and it was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy this year. At the opening of the exhibition I won the Stevenston Painting Award of £5,000. This same work was also chosen for the Federation of British Artists (FBA) Futures in January 2016, and I was invited to exhibit at the Mall Galleries alongside some of the other favourite graduates of FBA members from 2015. Finally, my work at Degree Show received the Catriona White Prize for Distinction in Drawing from Observed Reality and I was invited for a residency on the Isle of Iona in January 2017 off the back of this.

In the summer of 2015 I was also part of the Compass Gallery's New Generation Show. My work was kept in the gallery for their Summer Exhibition. My paintings and drawings were chosen to be exhibited alongside artists such as Barbara Rae and Joan Eardley.

The encouragement that ECA has given me led me to these opportunities. And they are still happening. The support I got was invaluable, and allowed me to devote my time to painting and developing work.
