Edinburgh College of Art, through the University of Edinburgh, offers both taught postgraduate degrees and higher degrees by research.
These programmes are interlocking and a student could, if required, make a transition from the MA to the MFA, leaving the institution with a single award.
All taught postgraduate programmes in Design are intended as a means of developing creative practice, although most contain elements of critical theory and discussion which will help students to define their individual approach.
Research degrees are based on independent study determined by proposals for research projects submitted by candidates. Such projects can be fully theoretical.
However, when appropriate, applicants are encouraged to submit proposals that challenge and expand traditional approaches to research in creative practice and design, via innovative theoretical and/or practice-led methodologies.
Candidates can also choose to undertake one of our specialist research degrees (MPhil or PhD by Design, MPhil or PhD in Composition, and PhD in Creative Music Practice).
