School of Art

In the School of Art we pursue the innovative practice, research, analysis and communication of visual, material and sensual culture. We think, make and critically reflect. The School is an engaged community of practising artists, writers, critics and curators and staff research encompasses a diverse range of expertise. The courses are devised through aspects of staff research interests and teaching is studio based and research focused.

The airy and light-filled studios, project spaces and workshops provide excellent facilities for making work, communicating ideas and generating dialogue. We have maintained and updated traditional workshop facilities and also invested in up to date computer aided technologies. This provides the potential for students to work across analogue and digital facilities learning how to make work relevant to their ideas.

Learning and teaching is a mix of one-to-one tutorials, group critiques, seminars, lectures and Project Space crits where students exhibit work in a designated space using the exhibition as a platform for critical reflection through discussion. Our Friday Talks lecture series invites leading practitioners to present their work to the School followed by a Q&A and studio visits.

Engagement takes place across the School, the College, the city and the country, establishing a supportive and critical framework where a contextualised understanding of the diversity of contemporary art practice and visual culture can be developed. Student trips and external projects are an integral aspect of all programmes in the School of Art.

We expect our students to demonstrate inventive responses to the world through curiosity and exploration and we prepare them to do this with depth, breadth and ambition. Our graduates are equipped with the talent, knowledge and expertise to lead, rather than simply respond to, future innovation in art practice.

Geri studied at ECA as a mature student, graduating with a Painting BA (Hons) in 2010. Recently she took part in a residency and exhibition in China.
