The Design and Digital Media programme offers opportunities for participants to develop new and existing skills and ideas in the creative use of current and emerging technologies. The programme attracts students with a range of previous study and work experiences, from fine art and humanities to computer science, and modular options allow students the flexibility to tailor their studies to their own interests and career goals.
The first semester provides an introduction and orientation to the programme, with two core courses and a choice of option. Students advance through a series of lectures, demonstrations, practical project work, exercises and critique.
The practice based Introduction to Digital Design core course introduces techniques and concepts used for designing and delivering digital media: the generation, manipulation and layout of artwork, text and other rich media in the context of commercial and arts-based practices.
The research based Media and Culture core course addresses broader notions of cross-disciplinary design. The development of a broad social and psychological understanding of the nature and role of information, metaphor and interface and debate about living and working with digital media forms an important component of the course.
Alongside these core courses, students choose either Introduction to Digital Modelling and Animation, or Introduction to Interactive Design allowing for deeper engagement with a specific field rather than the general character of the core courses. There are additional chances to work in both areas later in the programme.
The second semester builds on the first through practice, reflection and action, with the interdisciplinary Digital Media Studio Project course, application focused Dynamic Web Design course, and an option from courses offered throughout ECA and the wider University.
The programme concludes with a self-directed but supervised final project over the summer period in areas such as gaming, film, mobile applications and interactive installations.
