Postgraduate study in ESALA

We offer  postgraduate taught and research programmes across a wide range of subjects. These include one year taught masters, 2 year professional programmes and MSc by Research and PhD study. All our programmes of study are closely informed and defined by staff research interests that reflect the size and diversity of our School.

We offer taught masters study in Architectural Conservation, Sustainable Design, Architecture and Urban Design, Cultural Studies, Design and Digital Media, Sound Design, Art, Space Nature and Urban Strategies and Design. Our two year programmes offer professional degrees in Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Our MArch is prescribed by the Architects Registration Board and unconditionally validated by the Royal Institute of British Architects. The MLA Masters in Landscape Architecture is a two year degree and is fully accredited by the Landscape Institute.

We welcome proposals for major research projects at Master’s and PhD level. You will find a wide range of themes and areas of expertise among our academic staff. Our research profile is strong. At the last Research Assessment Exercise in 2008, the results showed ESALA to be leading Scotland in research in architecture, landscape architecture and the built environment. Within the UK,  our submission was ranked second in terms of volume of the highest quality research. We received a score of 70% overall in the 4* and 3* categories, indicating outstanding or excellent international quality and impact in our research.

Our PhD and MPhil programmes in Architecture span a wide range of what are often interdisciplinary interests that include Architectural History, Design, Technology, Environment, Sustainability, Architectural Conservation and Digital Media and Design. We also offer PhD and MPhil study in Landscape Architecture, and Cultural Studies. We also host a suite of 1 year MSc by research programmes.
